As I believe you know, EBS (Environment, Behavior and Society) has been a centre of excellence at the University of Sydney, Australia since the mid-1960, then under Ross Thorne, Terry Purcell and others. We have reinvigorated the area, and now how have five faculty members, a wonderful group of 14 PhD students and a succession of post-docs and visiting scholars including from Japan (Visiting Scholars have included Professor Toshihiko Sako, post-docs have included Dr Naohiko Hayata, and PhD students have included Dr Takemi Sugiyama).

We are now inviting applications for PhD and post-doc admission for 2006. I would appreciate if you might bring this to the attention of your students and others who may be interested. Being in the southern hemisphere, most students begin in March (though it is possible to begin in July) and the major scholarship deadlines close on 15 September, hence this announcement.

We invite applications for PhD admission, but also for MPhil (Master of Philosophy, by research), post-docs and undergraduate transfers to complete an undergraduate Honours research degree. To assist students, we have a range of fellowships, scholarships and prizes on offer for new and continuing EBS research students. Most of these are highly competitive -- some are Faculty specific, but others are University-wide and so are even more competitive. But we now have upwards of $200,000 in fellowships, scholarships and prizes for 2006 (attached). Please note that the next major deadline is 15 September for the International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (tuition remission plus ca $18,500 yearly stipend, plus a guaranteed $5,000 secondary top-up scholarship).

If you or your students have any questions, please visit our website at http://www.arch.usyd.edu.au/web/research/ebr.html where you will find application forms for admission and scholarships, or drop me a note.

All the best,

gary
